💐 Women’s Day edition: your money journey starts here

Hey There 👋
Happy Better Yourself Friday! This Sunday, South Africa celebrates Women’s Day 💐: a day that reminds us of courage, independence, and the power of people who keep pushing forward, even when the odds are not always fair.
So, we are kicking off this month by exploring the theme of money moves for graduates 💵✨. We will be getting into the “adulting” money conversations many of us wish someone explained earlier from payslips and credit scores to budgeting, side hustle payments, and building financial confidence one small step at a time.
For this Women’s Day edition, we’re starting with a simple but powerful thought: financial independence starts with understanding your money. Not when you have your dream salary. Not when you have everything figured out. Not when your life looks perfect. It starts with knowing what comes in, what goes out, what you’re working towards, and what choices are available to you.
And yes, this message is for everyone but especially for young women who are building careers, studying, job hunting, side hustling, and still trying to figure out what financial freedom looks like in real life. Financial confidence is part of empowerment. When you understand your money, you are in a stronger position to make decisions, ask better questions, protect yourself, and plan for the future 🌱.
Let’s jump into it, track your spending. You can do this by writing down everything you spend money on, be it transport, food, data, subscriptions, snacks and small transfers. This helps you see your expenses and make sense of where your money is going. This is important because you can start deciding where you actually want your money to go.
The second money move is learning to separate pressure from progress. Social media can make it look like everyone is making money overnight be it through trading, dropshipping, influencing, earning in dollars, investing, launching businesses, buying cars, and somehow waking up at 5am every day. However, real financial growth is usually quieter. It looks like learning one new skill, avoiding one bad money decision and making better choices over time.
This Women’s Day, we also want to remind you that you don’t have to know everything to begin. You’re allowed to learn as you go. You’re allowed to ask questions about salaries, payslips, contracts, tax, debt, credit, saving, investing, and side hustles. Money should not be a mystery, and financial freedom should not feel like something only other people get to chase.
So without further ado, here’s another installment of Better Yourself Friday

💡 Great Tips for Mahala
Saving doesn’t have to be a “one day when I’m rich” thing. Momentum’s article reminds us that every life stage needs a plan. Be it a set of clear goals, building an emergency fund, managing debt, and starting to save early (even in small amounts).
As life changes, your money plan should change too. The goal is simple: make your future self’s life a little less stressful.
