💻 Remote Work 101: What it really means (before you apply)
🔍 Before you say yes to an online job... check this out

Hey There 👋
Happy Better Yourself Friday! ✨This week, we’re diving into a topic that more and more students and graduates are curious about: remote work and what it really means to earn in foreign currencies. 🌍💸 You’ve probably seen people on social media talking about “getting paid in dollars”, working from anywhere, and landing online jobs with international companies. It sounds exciting and it can be but like any career path, it’s important to understand what remote work actually involves before jumping in.
So what is it? Well, remote work simply means doing your job from somewhere outside of a traditional office. That could be from home, a co-working space, campus, or even while travelling. But not all remote work is the same. Here are a few common terms you’ll come across:
Remote employee: You work for one company, but you do your job online
Freelancer: You work independently and offer services to different clients
Contractor: You’re hired for a specific period or project, often without employee benefits
Hybrid worker: You split your time between working remotely and going into an office
So when people say “I work remotely”, that can mean very different things depending on the role, company, and contract they have entered into. Reasons why it can be appealing to many people are as follows: access to opportunities beyond your city or country, more flexibility in how you structure your day, the possibility of earning in stronger currencies like USD, GBP, or EUR and exposure to international work standards, tools, and teams
That said, it’s not all “laptop on the couch” vibes. Some of the real challenges that can be encountered are as follows: working from home can feel isolating, you need reliable internet and a good working setup, time zone differences can affect your schedule and some remote roles expect you to be highly independent from day one. Yes, remote work can be rewarding but it also requires discipline, communication skills, and consistency.
In terms of earning in foreign currencies, this is what it actually means. You are basically being paid by a company or client based in another country, using their local currency. When that money is converted into South African Rands, it can sometimes feel like a big win, especially when the exchange rate is in your favour. 💰 However, there’s a catch, the amount you receive can be affected by bank charges, payment platform fees, exchange rate fluctuations and how and when you’re paid.
So yes, earning in foreign currency can be exciting, but it’s important to understand the full picture. Now that you know the basics, is remote working right for you ? Well it can be a great fit if you enjoy working independently, can manage your time well, communicate clearly online, are comfortable using digital tools and are proactive and reliable.
It may be harder if you struggle with structure and self-motivation, need constant supervision, prefer face-to-face interaction every day and get distracted easily in unstructured environments The good news? These are all skills you can build over time. 🙌.
So without further ado, here’s another installment of Better Yourself Friday
